Landfill capacity, citizen ordinance take center stage in Dubuque County data center discussion

Dubuque County officials are currently working to draft new regulations for proposed data centers, a process that saw approximately 50 citizens attend a recent Board of Supervisors' work session. A primary concern voiced by the public and a local Data Center Accountability Group is the potential strain on regional landfill capacity.
Residents worry about the disposal of demolition and e-waste generated by large industrial projects, an aspect they feel has been largely overlooked in previous discussions. Supervisors plan to meet with Landfill Director Ken Miller on August 24th to address these waste management concerns. KCRG-TV9 is also hosting a public forum called "The Data Center Divide" on Monday, August 17th, at 6:30 PM at Pickle Palace in Cedar Rapids, which will cover topics such as water and energy use, and community policies related to data centers.
