The City of Yorkville, Illinois, has entered into an agreement with the engineering firm Terracon for consulting services to address public concerns regarding air pollution from new data centers. The $10,000 retainer fee and associated costs for these services will be covered by the data center developers. This move comes after several Yorkville residents expressed worries about potential air pollution from the extensive data center developments planned for the city's Eldamain Corridor, often referred to as "data center alley." City Administrator Bart Olson indicated that this arrangement for air quality and emissions parallels a previous noise pollution study conducted by the city, which aimed to account for the cumulative noise impact of multiple data centers. While air quality and emissions regulations are primarily managed at state and federal levels, the city enforces its own noise ordinances. Developers like Pioneer Development LLC, involved in the 1,037-acre Project Cardinal, assert that their data centers are expected to generate very limited air pollution. Residents, however, have also raised concerns that the noise studies did not adequately consider the 10 to 20 years of expected construction activities. The city is currently considering over a dozen data center proposals across approximately 3,000 acres in the corridor.
