Cromwell officials are expected to consider a six-month moratorium on data centers after Global Common proposed a facility near homes and a school. Residents have raised concerns about noise, air quality, water use and neighborhood impacts, while the developer says the project would create jobs and revenue with limited effects on surrounding properties.

Cromwell, Connecticut, officials are weighing a six-month moratorium on data center development as Global Common explores a facility near homes and a school. The developer has not submitted a formal application, but CEO Bob Foxen said the proposed building would occupy about 12 acres, use little water and rely on natural-gas fuel cells for power. Global Common estimates the project could create up to 125 jobs, generate millions of dollars annually and help cover local homeowners' electric bills.

Residents including Juan Duque and Nicole Ferrara oppose the potential development, citing its proximity to homes and a school as well as possible noise, air-quality and water-supply effects. The Cromwell Planning and Zoning Commission rejected a proposed 12-month moratorium in September and is expected to consider the shorter moratorium at a meeting Thursday. Opponents are also seeking changes to what they describe as a regulatory loophole that could make approval easier.
