Constellation Energy has submitted a request to the Susquehanna River Basin Commission for permission to withdraw 73.2 million gallons of water per day from the Susquehanna River.
The water is slated for use in the proposed 2027 restart of the former Three Mile Island nuclear plant, located in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. The company states that the electricity generated would specifically support planned Microsoft data centers.
Environmental groups have voiced strong criticism regarding the substantial water withdrawal, citing concerns over its impact, especially in light of ongoing drought conditions in the region. The requested amount represents a minor fraction, approximately 0.3%, of the river's daily flow.
The Susquehanna River Basin Commission is currently accepting public comments on Constellation Energy's proposal until May 4.
