The Spartanburg County Board of Zoning Appeals unanimously affirmed the denial of a proposed 200,000-square-foot data center on Jones Road, upholding a June decision by county planning and development staff. The staff's initial denial was based on the project violating the Unified Land Management Ordinance and the ongoing consideration by the county council of a potential data center moratorium.
Sam Altman, representing Jones Road Associates, addressed the board, stating that the county's communication had been positive until June 26, leading them to believe the project was on track for approval after investing over $28 million. Board member Tom Davies affirmed that staff had followed proper procedure in their denial. Resident Martha Foster also spoke, advocating for regulations and ordinances to protect the community.
Despite the upheld denial, developers retain the option to reapply. However, the future of such applications remains uncertain, pending any approval of the proposed moratorium by the county council.
