The Alachua City Commission approved the first reading of a proposed 12-month moratorium on AI data centers during a meeting that lasted four hours. The measure passed 4-1, with Commissioner Jackson Youmas voting against it and calling for more specific language in the ordinance.

City officials said Alachua has no current data center applications or nondisclosure agreements involving data centers. The commission is expected to determine whether to enact the moratorium in a subsequent action; the issue had been delayed from the city’s previous meeting, frustrating some residents.
