A recent poll conducted by KOB 4 reveals significant opposition to "Project Jupiter," a proposed data center development, within New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District, particularly in Sunland Park. The survey found that 45% of respondents believe the project's costs outweigh its benefits, compared to 24% who think the benefits are greater. Key concerns driving this opposition include the project's potential impact on water and energy use, as well as air emissions, with 25% of respondents stating that verified limits on these factors would be crucial for their support.
Additionally, 10% of those polled highlighted the importance of enforceable commitments for local jobs and wages, while another 10% desired funding commitments for local schools, roads, water systems, and public services. A large segment, 29%, indicated that none of the proposed options would sway their opposition. The poll further showed that opposition spans political affiliations, with 58% of liberals, 52% of moderates, and 36% of conservatives opposing the project, citing that costs would outweigh benefits.
This local sentiment aligns with a broader bipartisan backlash against data centers nationwide, despite President Donald Trump's vocal support for such developments, arguing they bring wealth and lower taxes. His views contrast with those of some Republican politicians, including Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who advocate for restrictions on data centers. Even on the left, environmental advocates are at odds with some union leaders who typically back Democrats but support data center projects, underscoring the complex political landscape surrounding these developments.
