Gilroy extends data center moratorium to develop new zoning standards
The Gilroy City Council unanimously extended the city’s moratorium on new data center projects through September 2027. Officials will use the additional time to develop zoning and operating standards addressing water use, emissions, noise and traffic, while residents continue to press for controls on future projects.
The Gilroy City Council unanimously extended its temporary ban on new data center projects through September 2027, adding more than 10 months to the moratorium. City staff are developing objective zoning, development and operational standards covering issues such as water consumption, emissions, noise and traffic.
Residents urged the council to approve the extension and generally welcomed the decision, though some remain concerned about how Gilroy will regulate future data center proposals. The standards are being developed after an Amazon data center project previously moved forward without public input.
