Southaven Data Center Traffic, Noise Grow as xAI Expands
Residents near xAI's expanding supercomputer campus in Southaven say construction has sharply increased traffic, congestion and noise. The company is also facing an air pollution lawsuit over gas turbines, while Mississippi environmental regulators are seeking potentially millions of dollars in penalties.
xAI is building two additional supercomputer facilities in Southaven, Mississippi, as part of a campus that extends across the state line into Memphis. The expansion has increased truck traffic, congestion and construction noise near Tulane Road and Stateline Road, according to residents and a FOX13 report. The company says the two facilities, nicknamed "Gun Range" and "Spam," are expected to be operational by the end of 2026.
Residents including Najja Proby say neighborhood conditions have changed dramatically and are raising concerns about property values, road conditions and noise. Some homeowners have received property purchase offers connected to noise litigation but said the offers were too low. Separately, xAI is defending an air pollution lawsuit involving gas turbines after a judge denied its motion to dismiss, while Mississippi environmental regulators are pursuing potential penalties tied to the Southaven operations.
