Amazon withdraws data center proposal for former GW campus in Loudoun County
Amazon withdrew its proposal to build four data centers on the former George Washington University campus in Ashburn after strong community opposition. Under a new agreement with Loudoun County, the property will instead be developed as a mixed-use site, including a community arts center and indoor sports facility.
Amazon has abandoned plans for four data centers on the former 122-acre George Washington University campus in Ashburn following vocal community opposition. Loudoun County officials said the site was unsuitable for data center development because it would have required new transmission lines and other infrastructure, while residents expressed relief at the change.
Under the Project Potomac Promise agreement, Amazon will sell 25 acres to Loudoun County for approximately $65 million. The county plans to use the property for a community arts center and indoor sports facility. Resident Derek Robinson of Loudoun County Data Watch questioned the process, saying some Board of Supervisors members were unaware of discussions between the board chair and Amazon. Amazon said the agreement reflects a shared vision and avoids costly litigation.
