Shalersville residents outraged over data center proposal
Hundreds of Shalersville, Ohio residents voiced strong opposition to a proposed data center by Bitdeer, citing concerns over noise, water usage, and environmental impact. The Shalersville Township currently has a moratorium on data centers, and state-level discussions are ongoing regarding data center regulations.
Hundreds of residents from Shalersville and surrounding communities in Portage County, Ohio, expressed outrage and concerns during a recent meeting about a proposed data center. The Singapore-based company, Bitdeer, plans to construct the facility near Beck Road off State Route 44.
Local residents, including Nancy Brugmann, voiced strong opposition, stating they do not want the data center in their community. Concerns were raised regarding environmental impacts, potential water leaks, and excessive noise levels, particularly a constant hum that could affect local beekeepers.
Bitdeer addressed these concerns, stating plans to supply its own power and utilize a closed-loop cooling system for water recycling. The company also committed to third-party monitors to keep noise below 50 decibels and pledged funds for community engagement. However, Township Trustee Ron Kotkowski indicated that the township's legal authority to fully ban data centers might be limited, suggesting their hands are tied.
Shalersville Township currently has a moratorium on all data centers until November. Ohio State Representative Heidi Workman attended the meeting, providing updates on House Bill 646, which proposes a Data Center Study Commission. The bill has passed the State House and is now with the Ohio Senate.
