Historic turnout pushes Nashville to act on data center regulations

Hundreds of Nashvillians crowded a Metro Planning Commission meeting on Thursday night, urging the body to establish new regulations for data centers in Davidson County. Residents expressed concerns about the sensory strain data centers could put on children, as well as their water usage. This public outcry follows DC BLOX securing land adjacent to the Nashville Zoo for a planned facility.

While DC BLOX stated its designs would limit noise and reduce water intake, few attendees were interested in the company's presentation. The proposed bill aims to categorize data centers by size, imposing limits on their operation and proximity to neighborhoods, schools, daycares, parks, and zoos, effectively banning massive centers from certain areas. The meeting saw what one sponsor called the largest turnout in Planning Commission history.

Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell has publicly stated his support for a moratorium on large-scale data centers until "guardrails" are established. The Mayor is reportedly working with Metro Legal and other Metro departments to determine legal options for implementing safeguards to protect air, water, ratepayers, and residents from negative impacts. The Planning Commission is expected to make its recommendation by the end of June, with the Council voting on July 7th.
