Utilities and power generators in Texas are anticipating massive increases in electricity demand, primarily driven by the growth of artificial intelligence and data centers. CenterPoint Energy, a utility serving the Houston area, has significantly revised its peak load growth projections, expecting a 50 percent increase by 2029. This trend aligns with ERCOT's long-term forecast, which includes 24 gigawatts of new load from data centers by 2031.

Fourth-quarter earnings calls highlighted a significant shift in energy demand growth, particularly in Texas, fueled by the rise of artificial intelligence. Both regulated utilities and independent power producers are securing long-term supply deals with tech companies to meet the substantial electricity needs of AI-driven data centers.
Jason Wells, Chief Executive of CenterPoint Energy, reported during a recent earnings call that the utility expects peak load in Greater Houston to surge by 50 percent from 2025 levels by 2029, two years earlier than previous estimates. CenterPoint also projects annual operating earnings growth at the high end of its 7-9 percent target through 2028.
These projections are consistent with ERCOT's long-term forecast, released in August, which anticipates peak summer demand rising from 87 gigawatts in 2025 to 145 GW by summer 2031. This rapid growth includes a projected 24 gigawatts of load specifically for data centers and an additional 8.5 gigawatts for cryptocurrency operations, alongside industrial expansion, oil and gas, and population growth.
