A data center developer has proposed constructing a data center on 46 acres of land south of Maquoketa, Iowa, along US 61. The city manager, who supports the project, presented the proposal at a city council meeting, arguing it represents a "sweetheart deal" for the city. According to the manager, the city would not incur costs for infrastructure upgrades, would not offer special incentives, tax breaks, or TIFF districts, and would benefit from hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax revenue.

The proposed project in Maquoketa is considerably smaller than another data center planned for Clinton, which spans over 1000 acres. However, residents of Maquoketa are largely against the development.

During the city council meeting, the chambers were packed with residents, most of whom voiced opposition to the project. While some see the opportunity as a way for the city to thrive and welcome new value, others believe a data center would not be a positive addition to Maquoketa.
