Georgia EPD halts data center power plant construction, petition filed over electricity sales
Georgia Environmental Protection Division ordered power plant developer VoltaGrid to halt construction of its "pop-up" power plant supplying data center company Serverfarm due to air permit violations. This action followed evidence submitted by the nonprofit Sustainable Newton and other groups. Sustainable Newton also filed a petition with the Georgia Public Service Commission to determine the legality of VoltaGrid's electricity sales to Serverfarm.
The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) issued notices on July 2 to power plant developer VoltaGrid and data center company Serverfarm, ordering a halt to construction on air pollution emissions sources. This action stemmed from sufficient evidence of air permit violations submitted by the nonprofit Sustainable Newton and other groups, as reported by the AJC on July 8.
Following the EPD's order, Sustainable Newton further escalated its efforts by filing a petition with the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) on July 13. The petition seeks a determination from the PSC regarding the legality of VoltaGrid's sale of electricity to Serverfarm within Georgia.
