Gov: Belvidere City Council, Mayor Clinton Morris

Hundreds of residents in Belvidere, Illinois, attended a City Council meeting to express their strong opposition to a potential data center development, with approximately a dozen community members speaking during public comments. The topic, though not on the official agenda, prompted significant community turnout.

Belvidere Mayor Clinton Morris addressed the gathering, stating that while an introduction between the city and a potential new development, including a data center, occurred in early 2025, neither he nor city staff have since engaged in specific discussions with the identified developer, Datawatt, regarding site development. He clarified that only general discussions on property and utility management have taken place. Mayor Morris emphasized that the city is legally bound to follow proper public notice, published agendas, public meetings, and necessary hearings for annexation and zoning matters before taking any action on such a development.

The proposed development is slated for an area just outside city limits on Genanoa Road near Interstate 90. Resident Carter Huff voiced concerns for the agricultural community, stating his apprehension about potential unknown consequences of a data center, and questioning the safety of raising his children in the town should the project proceed.
