The City of Independence, Missouri is working on a plan to manage and invest potential new revenue from a proposed Nebius data center project.
According to a city council discussion on Monday, the interim city manager will be responsible for identifying a financial advisor or manager to help determine how to allocate the incoming funds from the data center. This responsibility will later shift to the new permanent city manager, Troy Anderson, who is expected to start on April 13th.
City council member Jared Fears, who voted in favor of the data center's tax abatement, said early estimates suggest the project could generate between $35-55 million annually for the city. The city wants to carefully consider how to use this money, with potential priorities including debt, roads, infrastructure, and other community projects.
Fears noted that discussions with both the community and city council will be critical in deciding the best way to invest the revenue back into Independence. For now, the city remains in the preliminary planning stages as it works to identify the right financial advisor or manager to oversee the process.
