LaPorte, Indiana, recently held a packed city council hearing where the public weighed in on the city's plans to annex nine parcels of land in Pleasant Township. This proposed annexation is directly tied to the development of a Microsoft data center that has already been confirmed for LaPorte County. The specific land is located between County Road 250 South and State Road 2, south of Boyd Boulevard.
LaPorte Mayor Tom Dermody confirmed an agreement between the city and county to move forward with this voluntary annexation, praising Microsoft as a valuable partner expected to bring jobs and improve the school system. Microsoft officials presented information on their partnership during the hearing.
While many union workers expressed excitement about the economic expansion, some local leaders voiced strong concerns regarding transparency. LaPorte County Commissioner Joe Haney stated that without more information from the city, officials were "in the dark" and had "a lot of concerns." Goot Logwood, a candidate for LaPorte County Council, also called for "more disclosure" and "more transparency" from local authorities regarding the project.
