Residents near Meta data center say construction already impacting neighborhoods
Residents near Meta's data center construction in Northeast El Paso are reporting increased noise, dust, and bright lights, sparking concerns about potential future impacts on health and homes. The El Paso City Council is scheduled to discuss negotiating a Community Benefits Agreement with Meta to address community concerns and commitments. The data center was approved in 2023 and broke ground late last year.
Residents living near the Meta data center construction site in Northeast El Paso, Texas, are expressing concerns over immediate impacts such as noise, dust, and bright lights visible from their neighborhoods at night. Tara Mitchell described the site as looking like an "amusement park" due to its brightness.
The project, which was approved in 2023 and began construction late last year, has also raised questions among residents and advocacy groups regarding its future demands on local resources like water and electricity. Cynthia Crouse, president of the Vista Del Norte Estates Neighborhood Association, voiced serious concerns about potential health issues and impacts on property values due to the facility's close proximity.
These community concerns coincide with an upcoming El Paso City Council meeting on June 23, where council members are set to discuss initiating negotiations for a Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) with Meta. If approved, the city would engage with Meta to define commitments and protections for the community, with a draft agreement expected within 45 days. Residents emphasize the importance of including enforceable provisions within any such agreement to ensure accountability.
