Union leader issues data center ultimatum to Kansas political candidates
A pro-labor event for Democratic candidates in Kansas escalated into a contentious debate over data center projects. Supporters of a statewide data center moratorium faced hostility and vulgarities from some attendees tied to union groups. The discussion highlights a division among Democrats regarding economic development incentives for data centers.
A pro-labor event on June 29th for statewide Democratic candidates in Kansas, held at the Lake Shawnee Event Center, reportedly transformed into a "pressure campaign" against individuals critical of data center projects.
Attendee Avery Rollins described an environment where supporters of a statewide moratorium on data centers were subjected to hostility and "vulgarities" from non-elected attendees affiliated with union groups. Rollins recounted that these individuals told moratorium proponents to "blank you."
Democratic hopefuls Ethan Corson and Dyna Sykes, who were present, have publicly endorsed Senate Bill 98. This proposed legislation aims to provide a 20-year sales tax exemption for specific data center projects, indicating a division within the party on economic development strategies. Labor leader Ty Dragoo, also a speaker at the event, stated he did not recall any inappropriate language being used and noted that his own remarks were met with applause, presenting a differing perspective on the event's atmosphere.
