Examining Ohio data centers impact on energy grid
Ohio's growing number of data centers are straining the state's energy grid, managed by PJM Interconnection, leading to concerns about potential rolling blackouts. A proposed hyper-scale data center in Cleveland's Slavic Village had its permit rejected. PJM is now considering measures to manage demand, including potentially kicking data centers off the grid during peak times.
Spectrum News reports on the significant energy consumption of Ohio's more than 200 data centers, which are putting immense strain on the PJM Interconnection energy grid. Jonathan Steirer, Interim Director with the Great Lakes Energy Institute, noted that a single hyper-scale data center could consume up to 150 megawatts, equivalent to powering 100,000 households. He highlighted the rejection of a permit for a proposed data center in Cleveland's Slavic Village neighborhood.
The Ohio Consumers’ Counsel predicts that companies plan to invest an additional $40 billion in data centers across the state by 2030, further exacerbating grid strain. Steirer warned that this led to near rolling blackouts during a recent Fourth of July heatwave and resulted in curtailment orders for institutions like Case Western. PJM Interconnection, responsible for serving 65 million people across 13 states and D.C., has identified hyper-scale data centers as the primary driver of increased load, having experienced its first energy generation shortfall in 2025.
PJM is reportedly considering measures to temporarily disconnect hyper-scale data centers during periods of high demand and is working to bring a backlog of new energy generators online. While Vipin Chaudhary, a professor at Case Western Reserve University, pointed out that AI-driven computing is becoming more energy-efficient, the overall demand for AI technology still outpaces current energy generation capabilities. The immediate focus remains on increasing energy generation to bridge this gap.
