Emporia, Kansas, saw a high turnout at a special meeting of its Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals on July 23 to discuss proposed zoning for a new data center. The William Lindsay White Civic Auditorium was filled with residents eager to voice their opinions on the controversial project.

Supporters, including Mike Law, Interim President at the Emporia Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the economic benefits, particularly following the recent shutdown of the Tyson plant. Law emphasized the community's need for such an economic boost, stating these projects are rare.

However, a strong contingent of residents expressed concerns, particularly regarding environmental impacts. One speaker advocated for protecting local water, environment, and energy resources, arguing against waiving requirements. Emporia resident Alexander Pruno worried about the suitability of Kansas's landscape for large data centers and potential issues with chemicals, water, and noise, suggesting the city might be rushing the decision.

The meeting facilitated separate comment periods for proponents and opponents, with a noticeably longer line for those against the project. Any digital infrastructure development in Emporia will require a development agreement approved by the city.
