Temple, Texas residents have initiated a recall petition against Mayor Tim Davis and City Council members Jennifer Walker and Mike Pilkington. This action follows the council's approval of a new data center, referred to as Project Ranger, which has led to significant distrust among the local population.
Protesters convened in downtown Temple, displaying signs and articulating their concerns that city leaders disregarded constituents' input despite an eight-hour discussion. Resident April Herboth emphasized the sentiment, stating that officials who do not prioritize their constituents' views are unfit for office.
Organizers are actively seeking 5,000 signatures to successfully recall the three officials, offering signing opportunities at the Cotton Patch Cafe. Protestor Jose Martinez voiced worries about the long-term impact on future generations, suggesting the project primarily benefits billionaires. The City of Temple issued a statement, but Rowan Data Center did not respond to media inquiries regarding the community backlash.
