Joplin sets new rules for data center development

The Joplin City Council unanimously approved new standards and regulations for future data centers within the city during its recent meeting. The decision followed nearly two hours of public comment and debate among council members and the public.

This marks the second time the council addressed an amendment to the Joplin Municipal Code to adopt specific definitions and standards for data centers. The initial amendment was tabled in July to allow the Planning and Zoning department to implement additional changes.

The newly passed regulations are described as more robust, incorporating specific limits on noise, water usage, and construction requirements. City staff included recommendations from the public throughout the development process of these standards. A local resident expressed satisfaction with the council's proactive approach, stating that without these protections, the city would be vulnerable to "unregulated tech expansion."

The data center standards ordinance now moves forward for a second reading.
