The Brookwood City Council has approved the annexation and rezoning of property for a proposed data center development. This decision brings the project, by Project Brookwood LLC, a step closer, but residents and an environmental group, The Hurricane Creek keeper, continue to raise concerns about the potential impact and demand more details about the project's demands.
The Brookwood City Council recently voted to approve the annexation and rezoning of property located near Brookwood Middle School, paving the way for a proposed data center development. This decision by the council is a critical step forward for the project, identified as being led by Project Brookwood LLC, by bringing the property into Brookwood city limits and reclassifying it to M2 light industrial.
City leaders, including Anna Hope Bigham, stated that the annexation provides the city with regulatory control over the property, ensuring that any future development will be subject to Brookwood's ordinances, including specific zoning rules on noise. They emphasized that without annexation, the property would fall under less stringent county regulations, offering fewer protections.
Despite the council's approval, residents and environmental advocates voiced ongoing concerns. Opponent John Wathen, also known as The Hurricane Creek keeper, highlighted worries about the significant demands a project of this scale could impose on the small city.
