The need for new rules stems from the growing demand for large-scale "hyperscale" data centers, driven by the artificial intelligence boom. These facilities consume significantly more electricity and water compared to the smaller, older data centers that have operated downtown for decades.
The issue gained prominence after the city rejected a permit application earlier this spring for a proposed 300,000-square-foot data center in Slavic Village. That facility would have required up to 150 megawatts of power, prompting concerns about its impact on local resources.
