St. Louis County weighs new regulations for data centers
St. Louis County is addressing concerns regarding data centers by weighing new regulations. Following public hearings, county leaders have developed a draft framework that categorizes data centers by size and impact, with increasing requirements for larger facilities. These proposed policies aim to regulate water usage, electricity consumption, noise levels, and strain on public infrastructure.
St. Louis County Executive Sam Page and other county leaders are actively addressing concerns related to data center developments following public hearings held in May.
Since those hearings, the county has been examining potential policies aimed at regulating data centers, focusing on issues such as water usage, electricity consumption, persistent noise, and the strain on existing public infrastructure.
The County's Planning Director announced that a draft framework has been developed. This framework recognizes the varying nature of data centers and establishes four distinct categories: micro, small, standard, and major. The requirements for each category will progressively increase with the facility's size, power demands, and potential community impacts, with the largest facilities facing the strictest restrictions under this proposal.
