Gov: Gaines Township Planning Commission, Gaines Township Board of Trustees
The Gaines Township Planning Commission in Michigan unanimously voted to table zoning ordinances that would allocate more land to Microsoft for a proposed data center. This decision came after a public meeting where hundreds of residents gathered, with a vast majority expressing strong opposition to the project.
While some residents, like Jason Morris, supported the project as a "generational investment" bringing jobs and economic activity, many others raised severe concerns. Stephanie Pratt, a nurse living near the proposed site, highlighted potential health crises due to the proposed 85-decibel limit for generators, linking it to industrial noise, increased asthma in children, and questioning claims of a closed-loop system.
The commissioners listened to community concerns before tabling the ordinances, seeking a "more thorough agreement" with Microsoft. The township had previously stipulated conditional agreements, and Microsoft has since agreed to address some issues, including energy prices, noise levels, and water usage. Should the commission eventually recommend the rezoning, it will proceed to the full board of trustees for another public hearing.
