The Reno City Council has approved a data center moratorium, effective until August 2027, with a 6-1 vote. This decision marks a reversal for some council members, including Mayor Hillary Schieve, who had previously opposed data center standards and moratoriums earlier in the year. Council member Kathleen Taylor was the sole dissenting vote.

The Reno City Council on Monday voted 6-1 to pass a data center moratorium through August 2027. Council member Kathleen Taylor, who has been consistent in her opposition to a moratorium, was the single no vote.
The vote reverses the stance of several council members, including Brand Anderson and Mayor Hillary Schieve, who in March 2025 voted against creating data center standards. Council member Devon Reese in January 2025 said he too was against a moratorium on data centers.
