Greenville approves temporary data center moratorium
The Greenville village board in Wisconsin has unanimously approved a one-year data center moratorium. This measure allows the village to assess the impacts of data centers on residents and businesses, and to update its general ordinances regarding such developments. The moratorium prohibits the construction of new data centers 10,000 square feet or larger.
The Greenville village board has enacted a one-year moratorium on data center construction following a 5-0 vote. The decision grants the Village of Greenville staff time to study the potential impacts of data centers on public health, safety, and general welfare.
Village President Jack Anderson stated the moratorium's purpose is to prevent unexpected developments and allow for the implementation of updated Greenville General Ordinances. The measure, which was recommended by the village's Planning Commission in May, specifically bars the construction of data centers exceeding 10,000 square feet. Existing telecommunications centers of that size may remain, but structural repairs or alterations are limited to 50% of the building's assessed value.
