The Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce announced its support for Google’s planned data center in Pine Island, part of Ryan Companies’ 482-acre Project Skyway. The project faces opposition from some residents concerned about utility costs and environmental impacts, while Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has warned it could cost ratepayers up to $1 billion.
The Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce is backing Google’s planned data center in Pine Island, Minnesota, which would occupy about 88 acres of Ryan Companies’ proposed 482-acre Project Skyway. The chamber said it viewed the development as a regional economic opportunity that could generate investment, jobs, infrastructure improvements, education support and tax-base growth.
The endorsement comes as some Pine Island residents oppose the project over potential effects on utility prices and the environment. Google has held a virtual webinar to address concerns about rising electricity costs, while Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has warned that the deal could ultimately cost ratepayers more than $1 billion.
