Meta’s Huntsville data center campus, which began serving traffic in 2021, is nearing completion of an expansion announced in 2022. The project will include seven buildings totaling nearly 3.5 million square feet, with the company’s total Huntsville investment exceeding $1.5 billion and supporting about 300 full-time jobs. Meta community engagement lead Henry Thornton said the company has prioritized local hiring and does not currently plan further growth at the site.
Meta receives electricity directly from the Tennessee Valley Authority and has signed a ratepayer protection pledge under which it matches its electricity consumption with clean and renewable generation. The company also partnered with Huntsville Utilities on water service and paid $7 million for local water and wastewater infrastructure upgrades. Meta said newer campus sections use closed-loop cooling and that it aims to become water positive by 2030.
The article also highlights Meta’s broader Alabama expansion, including a Montgomery campus whose investment has increased to more than $1.5 billion. Meta says it has contributed more than $4.5 million to Madison County schools and nonprofits, including funding for cyber operations education at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and STEM labs in Huntsville City Schools.
