Candidates for state and county offices discussed utility oversight, data centers and affordable housing at a forum sponsored by We Make Indiana in Porter County. The data center debate focused on how local officials should respond to potential large-scale facilities and whether their economic benefits justify concerns about quality of life, environmental impacts, infrastructure costs and tax incentives.

Commissioner candidate Kyle Nelson supported a moratorium modeled on Valparaiso’s pause while the county studies data centers’ effects and considers repeal of the state’s 50-year sales and use tax exemption. Republican candidate Mike Brickner opposed a moratorium but called for county zoning to determine where facilities could be built. Other candidates sought greater public disclosure, limits on impacts such as light pollution and requirements for closed-loop water systems, while some supported identifying suitable development areas and requiring developers to cover utility costs.
