Bob Marshall: With big investments come big pollution risks
Columnist Bob Marshall argues that Louisiana's incentives and secrecy agreements for SpaceX and data centers could expose residents to significant environmental and public-health risks. He highlights SpaceX tax exemptions, limits on public disclosure and lawsuits, wastewater violations, and potential impacts from large data centers on public water supplies.
In a NOLA.com opinion column, Bob Marshall argues that Louisiana's efforts to attract SpaceX and data center investment repeat the state's history of offering generous incentives and weak environmental protections to polluting industries. He says Gov. Jeff Landry and state lawmakers approved tax breaks and legal protections for SpaceX, while Vermilion Parish granted the company a 25-year property-tax exemption in exchange for annual payments.
Marshall also criticizes nondisclosure agreements and a state law exempting SpaceX from public-records requirements. He cites fines and lawsuits related to SpaceX wastewater discharges and wetland impacts, and warns that planned rocket launches and large data centers could create additional air, water and environmental risks that have not been independently disclosed or assessed.
