The Portage City Council in Michigan has approved a moratorium on new data center and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities. The measure, which will last through the end of 2026, comes as proposals for data centers, known for their high water and electricity consumption, continue to emerge across Michigan and the United States. The decision was partly driven by concerns from local residents regarding the potential impact on energy costs. Resident Cheryl Lathrop voiced her worries to the council, stating that her energy bills are already high despite her household's low energy usage. Lathrop expressed concern that families, especially those with multiple children, would struggle to afford utility rates if data center development were to lead to skyrocketing energy prices. In addition to electricity concerns, some residents also raised fire safety issues related to BESS facilities. While proponents of BESS maintain that current safety regulations adequately mitigate fire risks, the council's approval of the moratorium reflects a desire to 'pause' and address these community concerns before further development proceeds.
