ND counties talk about how to handle data centers
The North Dakota Association of Counties says data center development should be evaluated on a county-by-county basis because local conditions and tax benefits vary. Cavalier County has adopted a rule requiring data centers to be located more than one mile from city limits, amid public opposition and ongoing efforts to gather information.
The North Dakota Association of Counties discussed data center development during its annual meeting in Bismarck. The association said counties should make their own decisions based on factors including facility size, proximity to urban and rural areas, and potential tax benefits.
Cavalier County was cited as an example of local regulation, requiring data centers to be built more than one mile from city limits. Association President Nick Moser said public opposition remains significant, while also stating that data center noise reportedly reaches about 50 decibels when facilities are more than a mile away.
