Nye County approves data center ban, working on development agreement for future
The Nye County Board of Commissioners voted to ban data centers in the Pahrump area and Water Basin 162 following a lengthy meeting with significant public opposition. The board will discuss a development agreement for future data centers outside the banned zone at a special meeting, but rejected a proposal for a special election.
The Nye County Board of Commissioners has enacted a ban on data centers within the Pahrump area and Water Basin 162, a decision made during a contentious nine-hour meeting on Tuesday night. The vote followed strong opposition from over 100 residents who attended the session, voicing concerns about data center development in the county.
During the meeting, Pahrump resident Toni Hoverman was removed after making a comment that Nye County Chairman Ron Boskovich interpreted as a threat. The board had considered three data center-related items, ultimately approving the outright ban while rejecting a measure to put the future of data centers to a public vote in a special election.
While most attendees opposed data centers, some, like William Grubel, argued that not all residents were against the development. The Board of Commissioners has scheduled a special meeting for September 14 to discuss a development agreement outlining rules and regulations for any future data centers proposed outside the newly banned zones.
