How Champaign County residents organized an AI data center resistance
Residents in Champaign County have formed Resist AI Data Centers Champaign County to oppose large-scale and AI data center development. Organizers cite concerns about electricity demand, water use, pollution, noise, health effects and surveillance, while a county task force studies how development can be regulated after a one-year moratorium.
Residents Ruth Yontz and Antonia Herbstreit helped establish Resist AI Data Centers Champaign County after meeting through the Champaign Data Center Activities Task Force. The grassroots group has attracted more than 600 followers and holds public meetings to educate residents, organize public comments and oppose large-scale and AI data centers in Champaign County.
Organizers have raised concerns about power costs, water consumption, PFAS and other environmental impacts, noise, health effects, farmland conversion and surveillance. The county created a nine-member task force after a one-year moratorium on new data centers, but county officials say they may lack authority to ban the industry and could face lawsuits if they try. Clean Cloud Energy has contacted local officials about potential projects, including a proposal known as Rising Edge in Champaign.
