Microsoft presents data center expansion plans to the public
Microsoft is planning a major data center expansion in Cheyenne, Wyoming, following the Cheyenne City Council's rejection of a moratorium on new data center development. The company hosted a community information session to discuss its plans and address public concerns regarding water and energy usage. Residents expressed ongoing opposition and skepticism about the environmental and growth impacts, despite Microsoft's assurances about economic benefits and regulatory processes.
Microsoft is pursuing a significant data center expansion in Cheyenne, Wyoming, including plans to acquire and develop 3,200 acres in Laramie County and submitted applications for two additional expansion areas. The company hosted a community information session to address public concerns, particularly regarding energy, water, and environmental impacts, amid a historic drought. This public engagement followed a Cheyenne City Council vote, where a proposed moratorium on new data center development was rejected 9-1.
Jonathan Noble, Microsoft's senior director for infrastructure government affairs, emphasized the early stages of the development and the company's commitment to working with supportive communities. Residents, including Alex Bowler from the Cheyenne Area Landowners Coalition and Heather Madrid, who led a petition for a moratorium, voiced skepticism and specific concerns about water usage, wastewater disposal, and the broader impact of concentrated data center growth on diverse economic development.
Conversely, some residents like Justin Carter, who works in data center construction, supported the expansion for its job creation. Cheyenne City Councilwoman Kathy Emmons addressed public "misinformation" and clarified the lengthy and diligent regulatory process, noting that Wyoming's climate allows for different, more efficient cooling models than in hotter states, and that water and power usage are subject to strict oversight by the Board of Public Utilities. The city plans to host a public informational panel with representatives from various local entities to further address community questions.
