In Michigan, a debate is intensifying over emerging data center proposals, prompting the Michigan Chamber of Commerce (MI Chamber) to form a new coalition, 'Michigan for Responsible Data Centers,' aimed at informing local communities and municipal leaders about potential impacts. This initiative comes as residents and local governments express objections and propose moratoriums due to concerns about energy and water consumption. Jim Holcomb, President and CEO of the MI Chamber, emphasized the importance of computing capacity for Michigan's infrastructure and innovation, advocating for 'smart investment with responsible, transparent planning and community engagement.' He believes this approach can position Michigan as a leader in the digital economy. Conversely, some, like GOP gubernatorial candidate Tom Leonard, are calling for a pause on these projects. Leonard supports a petition urging the Michigan Legislature to enact an immediate one-year moratorium on new data center construction permits statewide and repeal corporate welfare subsidies for data centers. Governor Gretchen Whitmer, while acknowledging past investments in megasite projects, has expressed support for data center construction. She believes these facilities 'will get built' and stresses the importance of Michigan setting 'a high standard' to ensure they are built responsibly, protecting water and the power grid while providing living wages.
