Chamblee Councilman Furst spearheads moratorium on data centers
Chamblee At-Large Councilmember Jimmy Furst spearheaded an effort resulting in the City of Chamblee adopting a 180-day moratorium on data center development. The unanimous decision was influenced by citizen calls to pause and consider environmental impacts and quality-of-life concerns. The moratorium, in effect until January 16, 2027, will allow city leaders to review existing code and consider necessary revisions.
Chamblee At-Large Councilmember Jimmy Furst successfully led the effort for the City of Chamblee to enact a 180-day moratorium on data center construction. Speaking on "Closer Look," Furst stated his opposition to data centers in the 7.9-square-mile, densely populated city, despite its industrial history that might attract developers. He cited citizen demand for a pause to evaluate environmental impacts and quality-of-life concerns.
The council unanimously approved the temporary moratorium, which is in effect until January 16, 2027. This period will allow city officials to review current codes and determine if revisions are necessary. Furst expressed his personal desire for a permanent prohibition but acknowledged that the full council may not yet share that view.
Chamblee is also observing DeKalb County's approach to data center regulation to inform its own decisions, aiming to balance economic development, affordable housing, and greenspace initiatives with responsible growth.
