Pennsylvania Residents Oppose Project Hazelnut Data Center Development and Transmission Line

Pennsylvania residents are pushing back against a proposed AI data center development after receiving offers of $10,000 per eligible household. The controversy surrounding Project Hazelnut in Hazle Township highlights growing tensions between data center expansion, local communities, environmental concerns and the infrastructure needed to power artificial intelligence. Ed Negra, a resident of Eagle Rock Resort, says NorthPoint Development sent letters offering $10,000 to eligible households once the data center becomes operational. He describes the offer as a bribe, while emphasizing that money cannot compensate for the loss of peace and quality of life. The developer's letter also reportedly outlined $100 million in proposed support for the township. The proposed Project Hazelnut development involves land where more than 1,200 acres of woodland have been cleared or prepared for development, according to the supplied report. The initial application for 15 data center buildings was rejected by Hazle Township supervisors, Negra says. Meanwhile, residents of nearby Sugarloaf Township are fighting a proposed 500-kilovolt high-voltage transmission line that they fear could bring major changes to their valley, farmland and homes. Annie Vinatieri says her research led her to question whether the infrastructure would primarily support data centers and other major developments. Erika Cook warns that the dispute has grown beyond the power line itself. The fight reflects a wider debate over AI infrastructure in the United States: Who benefits from data center investments, and who bears the environmental and community costs? Watch the report for residents' accounts, footage of cleared woodland, developer correspondence and the growing opposition to data center development in Pennsylvania.
