Coalition asks Sioux Falls City Council for moratorium on permits for hyperscale data centers
Let Sioux Falls Vote, Dakota Rural Action and South Dakota for Data Center Transparency are urging the Sioux Falls City Council to impose a temporary moratorium on permits for new hyperscale data centers. The groups say the pause would give local officials time to develop regulations and public-engagement processes before Gemini Capital advances its proposed project in northeast Sioux Falls.
A coalition of Sioux Falls civic and advocacy groups is calling for a temporary moratorium on building permits for new data centers, including a proposed hyperscale facility from California-based Gemini Capital in northeast Sioux Falls. Let Sioux Falls Vote founder Amanda Kendall said the coalition is seeking time to establish appropriate local ordinances and a stronger public-engagement process, rather than permanently opposing development.
The Gemini project has not requested permits and has made no public progress since the South Dakota Legislature declined to extend sales tax credits for data center equipment. Kendall previously helped organize a petition challenging the Sioux Falls City Council's approval of a rezone for the potential site, but that effort failed.
