
Wisconsin Rapids data center developer talks cooling and water usage during virtual session
PNK Group, a data center developer, held an online information session in Wisconsin Rapids to address community concerns regarding water usage for its proposed facility. A consultant explained the use of a closed-loop cooling system with propylene glycol coolant, which would not be drawn from or discharged into the Wisconsin River. The company clarified that the chemical is not a "forever chemical" and would be delivered by tanker.
The PNK Group, a prospective data center developer for Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, conducted its second online information session to address local community concerns, specifically regarding water usage and its potential impact on the Wisconsin River. Residents have previously voiced worries about the proposed facility's water demands since plans for its development on the former Rapids mill site became known earlier this year.
Jim Gardler, a consultant from Bala Consulting Engineers working with PNK Group, clarified that the data center would employ a closed-loop cooling system utilizing a mixture of water and propylene glycol. He emphasized that this water would not be sourced from the Wisconsin River; instead, the coolant would be delivered by tanker truck from manufacturers. Gardler also assured attendees that the coolant would not be discharged into the river and that propylene glycol is a common, non-PFAS chemical. Additional community sessions are scheduled to discuss noise and a community benefits agreement.
