A webinar hosted by Sciline discussed nationwide data center trends, highlighting concerns about economic benefits, job creation, and strain on power and water resources. Experts emphasized that while data centers bring construction, their long-term employment is minimal, and their infrastructure demands can burden communities. They advocate for clear community benefit agreements to ensure local advantages.

A webinar hosted by Sciline, a nonprofit from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, convened industry experts to discuss the burgeoning nationwide trends in data center development. While these facilities are often touted for economic growth and their role in the AI boom, panelists cautioned that the long-term benefits for communities are often overstated and uncertain. A significant misconception highlighted by Dr. Lauren Keeler from Arizona State University's School for Future of Innovation and Society is job creation; while construction provides temporary employment, operational roles are minimal. Dr. Kate Stoll, project director for the American Association for the Advancement of Science, further stressed the immense infrastructure challenges, particularly regarding the power grid and water systems. She warned that inadequate planning for power expansion could lead to unfair costs passed on to ratepayers, while under-building results in grid instability. Water consumption, especially for cooling, was identified as another major concern, with Dr. Stoll dispelling the myth that closed-loop systems negate water usage, as increased power draw indirectly raises water demand at the source. The experts concluded that data centers need not be a burden, but communities must establish "clear rules" and "well-developed community benefits agreements" with monitoring and enforcement to fund public works and ensure proper resource stewardship, otherwise risking bearing costs without the promised advantages.
