Angelina County to consider legal work for Amp Z after rejecting tax abatement request
Angelina County commissioners will consider hiring an attorney to draft a road use agreement for Amp Z’s proposed data center campus east of Lufkin. The county rejected Amp Z’s proposed 10-year property tax abatement and is seeking additional information about the project, including its water and wastewater needs, before considering incentives.
Angelina County commissioners are set to consider spending about $1,500 for attorney Bruce Green to draft a road use agreement with Amp Z Champion Data Center Holdings LLC. The agreement would address the developer’s use of Twin Oaks Road and require Amp Z to cover damage, improvements and other costs associated with construction traffic at the former Southland paper mill site east of Lufkin.
The county rejected Amp Z’s original request for a 10-year property tax abatement and is withholding further consideration until the developer submits a complete application and holds a public informational meeting. County Judge Keith Wright has also requested more detailed estimates of construction spending, jobs, local purchasing and water and wastewater demand, with water use emerging as the community’s primary concern. The proposed data center and power facility could represent more than $1 billion in investment, with construction tentatively scheduled to begin in 2026 and operations expected in 2027 or 2028.
