'Everyone is concerned': Residents speak out against proposed data center in Amherst
Residents in Amherst, Ohio, are strongly opposing a proposed data center by Cervanka Development Partners, which would be built on the Nordson Corporation property. Over 150 people attended a City Zoning Board of Appeals hearing, raising concerns about environmental impact, health, property values, and high energy consumption.
More than 150 Amherst residents gathered outside City Hall to voice strong opposition to a proposed data center project. The City Zoning Board of Appeals held a hearing where Cervanka Development Partners sought a use variance for the current Nordson Corporation manufacturing location to build the facility.
Residents, some living directly across from the proposed site, expressed deep concerns regarding potential light pollution, environmental impact, health risks to children and the elderly, and the significant energy consumption, which they claim would exceed that of the entire city. Many also feared a decline in their property values.
Adding to the frustration, City Hall's limited capacity of 60 people meant many were turned away, despite the overwhelming turnout. A lawyer representing ten homeowners also faced initial difficulties entering the meeting. Eventually, people were allowed inside one by one to present their arguments, almost universally opposing the data center and requesting its denial.
