Palm Beach County halts new AI data center applications under moratorium
Palm Beach County Commissioners have voted to enact a moratorium on new applications for AI data centers. This decision, driven by resident concerns, aims to establish clear rules for future data center developments regarding issues like proximity to homes, water, and energy use. The moratorium does not affect existing applications like "Project Tango."
Palm Beach County Commissioners have voted 6-1 to enact a moratorium on new applications for AI data centers. The decision to pause new applications, which is expected to take effect in August, was primarily pushed by County Mayor Sarah Baxter following concerns from residents regarding the impacts of large data centers.
Mayor Baxter stated that the moratorium is crucial for defining parameters, including what constitutes a hyperscale data center, appropriate distances from homes and schools, and regulations for water and energy consumption. The move aims to establish clear rules for future AI data centers within the county.
Commissioner Maria Sachs cast the sole dissenting vote, expressing concern that the moratorium would not include the controversial "Project Tango" proposal, which already has an application in process and is scheduled for a commission vote next week. Mayor Baxter has recused herself from the "Project Tango" vote. The county has frozen all zoning related to new applicants while these definitions are being worked out.
