The Cortlandville Planning Board is reviewing a proposed one-year pause on new data center development. The temporary moratorium would give town officials time to evaluate potential impacts, including electricity demand, water use, noise and heat, before deciding whether and how to allow facilities within town limits. The Planning Board’s recommendation will go to the Cortlandville Town Board for a final decision.

The proposal follows data center restrictions adopted or considered in nearby New York communities. Dryden permanently excluded data centers and cryptocurrency facilities from its allowable uses after an earlier moratorium, while Caroline approved an 18-month ban. Other municipalities, including Massena and Buffalo, have considered similar measures, reflecting broader local concerns about regulating the industry’s growth.
