Trump unveils plan to keep AI boom from raising your electric bill

This initiative aims to prevent these costs from being passed on to American consumers and strengthen the electric grid by having companies fund and build their own energy infrastructure.
President Donald Trump announced an expansion of his administration's Ratepayer Protection Pledge, stating that AI companies and other large technology firms must bear the costs of power infrastructure for their new data centers, rather than shifting these expenses to consumers. Speaking at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Trump emphasized that the administration insists these companies "pay their own way" amidst surging electricity demand from the rapidly growing AI industry.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reinforced the goal of the expanded pledge: to prevent American taxpayers from subsidizing private companies' profits. Trump added that these companies would build and fund their own power plants and energy infrastructure, which he argued would both strengthen the electric grid and lower utility costs by feeding excess electricity back into the grid.
More than 220 utilities, technology companies, and state governments have already signed the voluntary pledge, covering power distribution to approximately 80% of U.S. households and businesses. The initial pledge, unveiled in March, saw major tech firms including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, Oracle, and xAI agree to fund necessary power generation and grid upgrades for their AI data centers. Michael Kratsios, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director, previously highlighted the pledge's intent to protect consumers' electricity bills while promoting American AI leadership.
The announcement comes amid projections of significant increases in electricity demand due to AI infrastructure, with a consulting firm, ICF, estimating potential monthly utility bill hikes of 15% to 40% by 2030 if costs are transferred to consumers. Trump reiterated that corporations creating the demand should finance the required new infrastructure.
